Founded in 1898 as Strong & Johnstone Co. by Ketchikan pioneers Henry C. Strong and Frederick C. Johnstone, our store was renamed Tongass Trading Company in 1900. Today, we enjoy an iconic status in Alaska as the oldest continuously operating business in the entire state.
Tongass Trading Company enjoys a rich history, starting in the early 1900s, when we provided supplies to the local miners. In the early and middle parts of the 20th century, we were busy offering household goods, furniture, clothes, and groceries to the locals along with supplies, gear, and storage to the commercial fishing and mining industries. Later, we also provided supplies to the booming logging camps of Southeast Alaska. Throughout our history, we have continued to keep pace with the progress of Southeast Alaska's residents and industries we know and cherish.
